Essential Travel Guide

Localization:

SIERPE-CORCOVADO-CAÑO ISLAND

Sierpe is localized in the northern end of the Osa Peninsula, South Pacific Ocean of Costa Rica. Its head is the town, located along the Sierpe River which gives its name to the district. Its surface consists essentially of a swampy land of the Térraba River Delta and its tributaries, the main one is the Sierpe River. The small village of Sierpe has located about 30 km from the Pacific Ocean along the Sierpe River, just 15 km south of Palmar Sur and 10 km southwest of the Interamerican Highway.

The Wetland Térraba-Sierpe is the main access for those wishing to go to Corcovado or Caño Island. It is also the gateway to one of the largest mangrove reserves in Latin-America. National Wetland, with an approximate area of 14,637 ha, it is located where the mouths of the Sierpe and Térraba rivers meet and contains some of the most diverse wildlife habitats in the world.

Corcovado National Park contains some of the only primary jungle of Costa Rica, one of the reasons the entire park is protected specifically for scientific research. It is home to over 350 known species of birds, countless reptiles, rodents, and amphibians, the four species of monkey, and is the only place in Costa Rica where you can find the five species of wild cats, including the Jaguar.

The area is also internationally well known for its archaeological findings of stone spheres in the Valley Diquís or Sierpe. In 2014, UNESCO chose the set of pre-Columbian chiefdom settlements and stone spheres of Diquís as World Heritage. On July 16, 2014, the Legislative Assembly of CostaRica declared it a national symbol of the country.

The warm clear water surrounding Caño Island is considered one of the best diving spots in Costa Rica and the world. Skin Diver Magazine contributes to Caño Island “the best diving of all the coastal Pacific.” Shelter provided by the underwater rock formations is the base of a colourful tropical ecosystem that offers an extraordinary variety of sea life,  create a panorama for you that extends as far as the eye can see, with up to 100 ft visibility in our waters.
